5 Common Myths About Chiropractic Care Debunked: Safe, Effective, & Evidence-Based Care

Chiropractic care is often misunderstood, and many myths circulate around its practice. Today, we'll set the record straight by addressing some of the most common misconceptions about chiropractic treatment.

Myth #1: Chiropractors Only Treat Back Pain

While chiropractors are well-known for treating back pain, their scope extends far beyond that. Chiropractors also address neck pain, joint issues, headaches, and even conditions like vertigo. They use holistic approaches to promote overall spinal health, restoring movement and nervous system function.

Myth #2: Chiropractors only crack spines and it hurts

The idea that chiropractic care is always a rough, painful process is far from true. A skilfully applied chiropractic adjustment is not painful, and chiropractors use a variety of gentle techniques, and at Clevedon Chiropractic we like to use the Impulse iQ® instrument, which delivers precise adjustments quickly and comfortably, without the need for seemingly forceful twisting or cracking. In addition to joint manipulations (or “adjustments”, many chiropractors also provide other manual and hands-on therapies. Here at Clevedon Chiropractic we will use soft tissue treatments such as muscle energy techniques, active myofascial releases and instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation (IASTM), customized rehabilitation, breathing advice, patient education, and more.

Myth #3: Chiropractic is Only for “Emergency” Situations

Many believe chiropractic care is only necessary after an injury or accident. However, regular chiropractic adjustments can help maintain spinal health, improve posture, and prevent future injuries. Preventive care is just as valuable as treatment for acute pain. Limitations in function are often present before symptoms start - these can be assessed and addressed before they become a problem.

Myth #4: Chiropractic Care Is Not Supported by Science

Chiropractic care has a solid evidence base. Numerous studies show its effectiveness in managing musculoskeletal conditions, especially for conditions like lower back pain and headaches. Chiropractors also work alongside other healthcare providers to deliver integrated care. For example, spinal and joint manipulation has been shown to be effective treatment for acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, like back pain. In fact, spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is recommended as first line intervention for back pain in numerous clinical practice guidelines including the Bone and Joint Decade Task Force(1),  the American College of Physicians and American Pain Society(2) as well as Britain’s National Institute of Health and Care Excellence(3).

Myth #5: Once You Start, You'll Be Going Forever

Chiropractic care is not a lifelong commitment unless you choose it to be. Most patients recover in a few targeted sessions. Maintenance care is optional, like regular massages or physio check-ups, and is aimed at maintaining progress—not dependency.
