FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No referral is needed to visit Clevedon Chiropractic. Simply contact us to schedule an appointment for your back pain, neck pain, or other musculoskeletal issues.

Is chiropractic care covered by ACC?

Yes! Chiropractic care is covered by ACC in New Zealand for qualifying injuries. We’ll guide you through the process to ensure you receive the appropriate coverage.

Is chiropractic safe?

Yes, chiropractic care is widely regarded as safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. It’s a non-invasive, drug-free approach that can effectively address many conditions.

Will you ‘crack” my neck?

No, not ever. Treatment usually involves precise gentle manipulation, called an 'adjustment', of the spine and other joints using an Impulse iQ® instrument. The advantage of this over manually “cracking”  the joint is that the device delivers a thrust 100x faster than can be done by hand. This allows the adjustment to be delivered in a relaxed, usually face down position without any need for twisting.  Other gentle techniques may be incorporated such as taping, soft tissue massage, and rehabilitation exercises. This is combined with advice and patient education.

What happens on the first visit?

Your first visit will provide plenty of time for you to explain what’s going on. We’ll ask about your medical history and details of your current issue. Following this, the chiropractor will perform a thorough examination and an in-depth biomechanical assessment to identify the problem and determine if chiropractic care is suitable for you.

At Clevedon Chiropractic, we aim to start treatment during your first visit unless X-rays or further investigations are needed. You’ll receive a report of findings at this appointment (or later if additional tests are required). We’ll explain the issue, what can or cannot be done, and outline a tailored treatment plan for your condition.

Our goal is for you to leave your first visit feeling a bit better and with a clear understanding of what’s going on and how we can help.

How long can I expect to be treated?

The length of treatment depends on your specific needs.

  • Initial Consultation: Typically lasts about an hour.

  • Follow-Up Treatments: Usually 20–30 minutes.

Acute, recent issues often respond quickly, usually within 3–6 treatments. Chronic or long-standing conditions generally take more time, with 6–12 visits being typical. On average, most patients require about 6 treatments. After completing your initial course, occasional maintenance sessions may be recommended to help sustain your progress and prevent recurrence.

Can you fix me today?

Every case is unique, so it depends. Acute, recent conditions often respond quickly, with noticeable improvements in a short time. For chronic or longstanding issues, recovery typically takes more time and consistent care. That said, we have a strong track record of helping patients achieve significant results, even when other treatments haven’t worked. The first step is a thorough evaluation to determine the best approach for your specific needs.

Why am I given exercises?

Think of the treatments as a reset for your body’s nervous system, improving communication between your brain and body. The exercises you’re given act as reinforcements for that reset, helping to strengthen those new pathways. They not only speed up your recovery but also make the results more lasting.

Can older adults benefit from chiropractic care?

Absolutely! Age should never be a barrier to seeking care. Staying active as we age is critically important, and I’m a strong advocate for “use it or lose it.” My role is to help you stay mobile and active safely.

With a gentle approach, I regularly treat older patients, addressing age-related concerns like osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and balance issues. These conditions are carefully assessed to ensure the treatments are safe and effective. Care plans are tailored to address the musculoskeletal conditions detailed in the "Conditions" section while considering the specific needs of older adults.

Do I need to keep coming back for treatment after I feel better?

Not necessarily. If your issue is chronic (longstanding) or tends to recur frequently, research indicates that periodic check-ups may help maintain your improvement and prevent setbacks. Think of it like routine maintenance for your car—regular care can help keep everything running smoothly and reduce the chance of bigger problems later.
